Regarding whether acupuncture can produce anesthesia, I have seen relevant documentaries. It was filmed in the 1970s and 1980s, and the content was about acupuncture and anesthesia.
Later, I also asked my colleagues in the anesthesiology department, and they told me that there are two types of acupuncture anesthesia, one is acupuncture anesthesia alone, and the other is acupuncture + drug anesthesia.
Among them, the protagonist Lin Sanqi in the novel uses single acupuncture anesthesia. However, this anesthesia has a limitation, that is, it can only be used for pain in the lower back and limbs. The analgesic effect is not particularly good, but it is sufficient.
If it is used in an emergency or in a field hospital, it is equivalent to "local anesthesia."
For example, Zhu Xiaoxia was bitten in the novel, and the wounds were collectively on the back, buttocks, and limbs. Debridement and suturing did not require general anesthesia, only local anesthesia was required, so acupuncture anesthesia was suitable.
There are also confirmed and true records that acupuncture anesthesia can be used in "semi-anesthesia surgeries", such as appendicitis, cesarean section, varicose veins and other surgeries.
Of course, the author has never seen this before, and only found out about it by looking up information or asking other colleagues.
Acupuncture and anesthesia should be performed by no one except some seniors in traditional Chinese medicine hospitals.
The main reason is that one is that acupuncture anesthesia is definitely unreliable from the perspective of a doctor specializing in Western medicine. No one would use acupuncture to anesthetize stupidly when there is an option of drug anesthesia.
There is a medical safety issue here.
In addition, it also involves a medical practitioner law, acupuncture and anesthesia, which anesthesiologists must not do because it is traditional Chinese medicine and exceeds the scope of practice.
But TCM doctors can’t do it either. This is a matter for the Department of Anesthesiology. If a TCM doctor comes to act as an anesthesiologist, it’s also beyond the scope of practice.
Therefore, from a legal point of view, whoever practices acupuncture and anesthesia is breaking the law, and everyone loses in lawsuits, so it is impossible for anyone to learn acupuncture and anesthesia in a thankless manner.
